HISTORY. Anything before the incident has been suppressed by her, and when inquired, she acts as though it never happens. It's hard to tell what really did happen, her story changes every time. The official documents can fill in the gaps. Roger and Amelia Swinton were wed at a young age, though they didn't have children until they were nearly thirty. A daughter came first, by the name of Marissa. She was a happy little girl, always cheerful and optimistic. Four years later came a bouncing baby boy, by the name of Edwin. They were the perfect image of a happy family. But Roger had a secret. He came from a long line of warlocks. Nobody ever suspected that it would be his ultimate downfall, despite the war. He was a careful man. He even worked for the government in Safehaven, as a developer to help the officials gain the upper hand against the rebels. Marissa's mother lived in constant fear, but was always reassuring her children that things were fine. The children flourished in their schools and personal lives. Nobody thought that there was anything wrong with the Swinton family, and they were able to keep the ruse up for years.
However, his cover cracked when Marissa was seventeen. It was one particularly late shift at the office when disaster struck. Roger had worked for years to fabricate his lies and cover, but another employee sold him out to save their own family. The agency left him alone as he finished how work. They even left him alone as he went back home. It was then that they struck. What better way to make an example of someone than in public, in a Safehaven area where the news coverage would be all over it? The family had just finished eating dinner when they struck. Roger was dragged out of the home, and the people made sure to create lots of noise to ensure a maximum audience. At first, it was thought that there would only be a brief show of power – that the family would be left fine after Roger was brutally injured, but not killed. This was not the case. At first, it appeared to be. She could barely see through the tears streaming down her face, and she was screaming for the agents to stop beating her father. The image of her father being burned alive has been forever burned in her retinas. They turned to her brother. The magick blood showed in the male side.
Fortunately, Edwin was not killed. That was Marissa's doing. There were a few options for him, as he had not exhibited any visible signs of having the genetic code for magick. Most of those options involved the same fate as his father. Having already seen what could happen, Marissa couldn't just stand by if her baby brother were to be also killed. She made a choice. This night was the incident. She made a trade. In return for her family's safety, she would join their time. She would become an agent for the government, doing things that the older agents couldn't do. She could get in with a certain crowd that they wouldn't have been able to get to. The agents present saw the advantage of having a teenager join them. Her mother became even more emotional than she had been – she couldn't give up her husband and daughter. Marissa had made up her mind. She was going to save them. She had no choice if she wanted to see her mother and brother live. By that time, many of the neighbors had been frightened inside. The only witnesses were relocated to a city far away, to ensure they would not relay this information.
Marissa is a creature of the past. She no longer exists. Somewhere along the training, Alaina Marceau was introduced into the world. The young woman who earned that name also changed to become a completely different person. She is an agent, willingly. It has mutated and modified her perspective, but Marissa's family is alive. Though this doesn't matter to Alaina, Marissa cared deeply about it. At first, Alaina was only on a few simple missions. She was openly an agent, and she worked behind the scenes. It was only after six years that she was unleashed upon the world. The Bludhounds weren't getting enough information. They needed to cut out the remaining magick-users. The conventional methods were not working. Her latest mission is supposed to change that. Alaina looks like anyone else, and she can play any twentysomething role she needs to. She is still tied to the agency, but she is virtually cut off and on her own. She needs to find out how to destroy these little gangs, from the inside out. She needs to get information on hidden refuges. She needs to figure out how to get rid of the rebels, once and for all. Alaina is good, in a sense. The rebels are killing innocent people. However, she is also destructive, working for those who have killed magick-users like her father.
PERSONALITY. She is, in a sense, the perfect agent. Alaina has been conditioned over the past few years to become a certain type of person. She is extremely analytical, always calculating and trying to piece together everything. Observant, some would say. Though she may not act like it, she is paying attention to everything around her and storing away the information for later use. Even when she is always paying attention to others, she is also always watching her own actions. Everything that Alaina does is done so because she has analyzed the situation and feels it the best way to respond. She is a horribly good liar, able to do with barely any hesitation. She is quick on her feet when it comes to thinking, and she will most likely be able to come up with some sort of reason or excuse that makes sense. Though she may be mentally panicking, it is rare for that to reach the surface. She can be quite the actor, masking her emotions. She learned very quickly that other people could take advantage of her hesitance or fear, and twist everything away. When she isn't pretending to be a certain way, she can often times come across as cold and distant.
There are a few other traits that have come to define this young agent. She is very manipulative, often times twisting words and ears. If she detects that you dislike her or are suspicious, she will actively work to make herself seem appealing and innocent. She will slip into any sort of persona to charm you, even if it's all an act. If you're unfortunate enough to know her when she isn't playing pretend, you'll know the sweet as sugar image isn't true. She can be extremely blunt, and easily go too far to cross the line into being harsh. If Alaina doesn't like a coworker, it is not a surprise if they find out. She is not easily impressed, and will not hesitate to tell someone such. At times, it may appear that she doesn't censor herself, but this is only around other agents or people she knows she can trust. Alaina can also be extremely cruel and ruthless. The years of training and violence of the Bludhounds have certainly worn off on her, and she tends not to be fazed by these anymore. That cute persona can slip to be a cold-hearted bitch, if she feels it is the right time for it. She could easily order a stranger's death or break bones in an attempt to get information. She is willing to stop at nothing to prove her worth to the organization, going through everything and everyone to do so.
However, as manipulative as she is, Alaina can also be incredibly easy to manipulate. Marissa no longer exists, and she actively works to ensure that her previous life never comes up. If someone figures out her origins, she can allow that paranoia and fear to explode. She is a paranoid individual in general, but this would make it easily worse. She can become an emotional wreck if her father and brother are brought up, especially if threats are made. While she has no problems harming someone she does not know, this is not the case for everyone. Family members or people she was close to when she was younger are out of the question, and she will forcibly refuse to harm them. She can also be controlled if someone is trying to make her appear foolish and not suited to work alongside them. Alaina has a strong desire to prove herself, making it easy for someone to latch on to. She can be easily walked over by older, more experienced officials, and often do stupid things just because one tells her too. Alaina also seems to lack all of the knowledge of the "real world". She was young going in, and doesn't fully understand the danger. She believes she does, another downfall, but she really has no idea what she's really in. Danger appears not to resonate with her, nor do the thoughts of repercussions.
APPEARANCE. To some people of the city, fashion is a dying art, and shouldn't be concerned with. If they were to talk to Marissa, she might have agreed. Alaina certainly does not. However, on the negative side, being inconspicuous is not always something her clothing style is good at. If she were perpetually on a training mission, she would be forever wearing a tight sort of spandex-like suit. She can sometimes still be caught in it, though only if she were needed for some sort of special mission. Most of the time, her clothing is completely different. Alaina tends to have a classic sort of style, mostly coming from what she can round up at thrift stores or throwaway piles. She has many skirts, though she wouldn't often wear them in public for convenience reasons. She doesn't have much of a need to dress nice, despite the fact that she still holds on to many business-like outfits. Even her night clothes are in the style, lacy an silky, with some sort of prettiness to them. It's much more common to see Alaina in blouses and a pair of jeans than a skirt or dress. She likes outfits that look like they came from a while ago, with things like floral patterns or lace. She also adores necklaces and rings. However, she tends to cover any of these shirts with a long, black peacoat.
There isn't particularly anything that seems intimidating about her at first glance. That's probably a good thing for Alaina. Her body appears thin, but is lined with lean muscle. She isn't the most physically strong woman, though she certainly isn't defenseless. She is around the height of 5'5", not quite the smallest person out there, but she is far from the tallest. That brunette hair of Alaina's is natural, surprisingly, compared to the number of agents she has met who have altered their appearance. It's often kept up in some sort of ponytail or messy bun, and rarely does she allow it in her face. Of course, when she's trying to find someone or something, she may leave it down; it all depends on the social context. Her make-up is the same way - she can easily rim her eyes in liner and use lipstick, or she can only wear concealer. She is rarely seen without it, however. Despite her attempts to blend in, there's something about the way she looks that tends to set her apart. It's probably the way her dark eyes permanently have a layer of ice. It could be from the way she raises her eyebrows and smirks most of them time. She talks with her hands, and that cool and cut-off demeanor can easily translate into her mannerisms. Alaina is a bit confident, and it is this cold confidence that often results in her pristine posture or hand gestures. However, most common people won't see that side. They'll see the unimpressed facial expression, sure, but they will see a girl who slouches slightly and tries to hide.
